The Prize
It was a rare moment when composer Amelia Parker performed one of her own songs, but at this awards show she had chosen to do just that. The crowd of well-knowns and hopefuls alike were hushed by the lyrics she had so lovingly crafted and her haunting melody. And once again most of them wondered why she had chosen not to pursue a career as a singer. But the man in the front row knew – JC knew.
“And the winner for song of the year is…” Justin made a dramatic pause as he opened up the envelope and handed it to Lance to make the announcement.
An anxious JC read over Lance’s shoulder, mouthing a grinning ‘yes!'
Lance leaned into the microphone. “My Everyday Hero. Amelia Parker, writer. JC Chasez, producer.”
Amelia was dumb-founded as she went to the podium to claim her award. Justin, Chris, Joey, and Lance all had big hugs and kisses for her. JC handed her the golden statuette and kept her hand in his.
“Wow!” Amelia crowed to the audience. “I’d say somebody pinch me, but with these guys up here, I’d be bruised for sure!” That drew a communal laugh from the on-lookers. “I want to thank everyone who responded to this song. It’s people in our lives every day who are heroes without knowing it. They save us on a daily basis… I’d like to thank Mandy for bringing the song to life -- and not hating me for wanting to sing it tonight…And, Josh, you are my hero every day.”
JC put an arm around her waist as he made his brief speech. “It’s not hard to produce when you got great material…And I thank God for bringing Ami into my life.”
Amid the applause and slaps on the back, JC walked Amelia offstage. Cameras and reporters be damned, he swept her up in a sweet lingering kiss.
“My hero,” Amelia whispered.
